Free Geography Tools

June 5th, 2008 by Chris Mueller

UUorld recently received a positive review by Leszek Pawlowicz at Free Geography Tools. We’ve been regular subscribers to Leszek’s blog, and greatly enjoy his posts. He covers a wide range of topics including GIS, GPS, Google Earth, and thematic mapping.

Some of my personal favorites from the blog are the maps of war the animated Civil War maps. Animated maps of this sort tell a kind of story that you can’t find in traditional textbooks. (On this theme, the over-sized but beautiful book is worth a look.)

Thanks again to Leszek for maintaining a great website, and for graciously commenting on our software.

Thematic Mapping Blog

May 16th, 2008 by Chris Mueller

Bjørn Sandvik, of the , has a great collection of thematic mapping information. In a recent , he compares the maps generated by UUorld to similar maps that can be generated with KML and Google Earth. Over the past few months, we have developed some tools to automate KML generation in this manner, and it appears there are several inherent problems in using KML to draw thematic prism maps, especially those that change over time, since KML requires the repetition of all geometries for each timeslice.

We highly recommend the Thematic Mapping Blog!
